چکیده

A unique, multi-phase, random, complex, and composite material, concrete provides both strength and impermeability to engineered structures. Unlike most construction materials, the properties of concrete continue to develop over time and in place—assisting processing and fabrication. Testing and quality assurance, however, become more complicated. For instance, having to wait 28 days to ensure performance compliance is a unique, but not necessarily an attractive, feature of concrete. Computer models today attempt to reduce the length of this waiting period through the prediction of cement and concrete properties by means of virtual testing. Based upon a detailed characterization of starting materials, such models predict a variety of properties of both fresh and hardening concrete. Successful prediction of properties with virtual testing will result in tremendous time and cost savings to the cement and concrete industry, and will play an important role in enabling the use of performance specifications. Virtual testing will also support the capability to rapidly perform a large number of “what-if” type computations to explore and optimize new material systems. The successful prediction of properties through virtual testing is the goal of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)/Industry Virtual Cement and Concrete Testing Laboratory (VCCTL) consortium. Its members currently include two NIST laboratories (Building and Fire Research and Information Technology) and nine industrial members: Holcim (US) Inc., International Center for Aggregates Research, Portland Cement Association, National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, Sika Technology AG, Verein Deutscher Zementwerke eV, W.R. Grace & Co., Degussa/Master Builder Technologies, and Association Technique de l’Industrie des Liants Hydrauliques. A report on the progress of this consortium’s work follows, along with a general overview of what virtual testing of cement and concrete actually is and what it aims to accomplish. EVALUATION OF CONCRETE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH USING ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORK AND MULTIPLE LINEAR REGRESSION MODELS

In the present study, two different data-driven models, artificial neural network (ANN) and multiple linear regression (MLR) models, have been developed to predict the 28 days compressive strength of concrete. Seven different parameters namely 3/4 mm sand, 3/8 mm sand, cement content, gravel, maximums size of aggregate, fineness modulus, and water-cement ratio were considered as input variables...

Evaluation of Coal Waste Ash and Rice Husk Ash on Properties of Pervious Concrete Pavement

The use of pervious concrete has been significantly considered in recent years. This consideration is due to the properties of pervious concrete in relating to the environmental sustainability that is utilized in the effective management of the runoff from rainfall. Coal extraction and rice husk obtained from milling, produces wastes that have no application and followed by environmental pollut...

Prediction of cement physical properties by virtual testing

Assuring the quality of the massive quantities of cement produced worldwide each year is a daunting task. Currently, the cement industry performs extensive physical testing to assess the quality of their product, resulting in large costs for both materials (and their disposal) and labor. One of the major goals of the Virtual Cement and Concrete Testing Laboratory (VCCTL) consortium is to provid...

Contributions of NIST/NBS Researchers to the Crystallography of Construction Materials

For more than 100 years, the primary theme underlying the NBS/NIST staff contribution to the crystallography of building materials has been the development of an improved understanding of concrete materials performance. Over that time period, portland cement concrete has become one of the most important of our construction materials for roads, buildings, and other large municipal structures. At...

Properties of concrete containing scrap-tire rubber--an overview.

Solid waste management is one of the major environmental concerns in the United States. Over 5 billion tons of non-hazardous solid waste materials are generated in USA each year. Of these, more than 270 million scrap-tires (approximately 3.6 million tons) are generated each year. In addition to this, about 300 million scrap-tires have been stockpiled. Several studies have been carried out to re...
